First Questions to ask

Access needs – translation, interpreter, disabled access, etc.

From 1st October 2004 the Disability Discrimination Act required all service providers to change or make reasonable adjustments to their premises or the way that they provide services so that they are not difficult for people with disabilities to use.

The Disability Rights Commission has launched a campaign across the UK to provide information to service providers on how to make their services accessible. The Internet site Open 4 All 2004 (external link) includes guidance on the regulations and how to make the environment inclusive for disabled people and the whole community.

The ICAS advocate should identify any special needs and arrange, where necessary, for

  • access for disabled people
  • a hearing loop
  • interpretation
  • signing
  • other support
