Joint procedures for the Healthcare Commission and Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI)

In April 2005 the independent review of complaints made against Local Authority Social Services will become an important new function of CSCI. This represents the most significant change in the statutory Social Services complaints procedure since it was first introduced in 1991.

The Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Act 2003 amended the existing statutory Social Services complaints procedure, and placed a duty upon CSCI to work closely with the Healthcare Commission (external link) for independent review of complaints concerning joint health and social care provision. This will be implemented from April 2005.
